The engineer steering New Zealand’s biggest infrastructure job says Auckland’s alert level disruptions and ongoing border closures have made cost blowouts unavoidable at the City Rail Link (CRL).Chief executive Sean Sweeney said the project, jointly sponsored by the Crown and Auckland Council, is now behind schedule and likely to come in above its $4.4 billion price tag. The project was originally scoped at $3.4b and recalibrated in 2019 by another $1b after a review of project costs.
