New Zealand Aluminium Smelter has agreed with Meridian Energy to voluntarily cut production at the Tiwai Point smelter in return for compensation to help manage hydro lake levels.The country’s largest electricity will reduce its consumption at the smelter by up to 30.5 megawatts effective from today to May 31. This will kick in before lake levels are low enough for Meridian to require the smelter to make cuts under the supply contract.The swap will compensate NZAS for any load it voluntarily decides to reduce.
