Record Auckland building consents may be peak, say economists

A record number of new building consents in Auckland is making progress against the city’s housing shortage, but economists warn construction may be reaching its peak.StatsNZ figures today show 37,538 new homes were consented in calendar 2019, the highest annual number since 1974. New Zealand’s population has increased by almost 2 million people since then.Growth was driven by higher density builds such as townhouses and apartments.
