Foodstuffs North Island fined $3.25m in covenants case

A Wellington High Court judge has ruled Foodstuffs North Island must pay $3.25 million for its use of anti-competitive land covenants. The Commerce Commission (ComCom) previously alleged grocery co-op Foodstuffs NI, which operates Pak'nSave, New World and Four Square stores, lodged land covenants to block competitors from opening and developing rival supermarkets in the lower North Island.ComCom settled proceedings against Foodstuffs NI on June 19, and Justice Paul Radich held a penalty hearing on Thursday.
