The government’s books were in a healthier state in the first four months of the fiscal year than forecast as more tax flowed into the coffers than expected and drawings on the wage subsidy scheme were lower than expected.The operating balance before gains and losses was a deficit of $3.82 billion in the four months ended Oct. 31, more than twice the $1.08 billion shortfall a year earlier, but less than half the $8.58 billion deficit Treasury officials forecast in the September pre-election update.That was due largely to core tax revenue...
