The government will invest up to $140 million in a $300m upgrade to New Zealand’s only steel mill, at Glenbrook south of Auckland, in the largest single action taken to date to reduce the country’s greenhouse gas emissions.By converting half of its current steel production to use electricity instead of coal, Australian-owned NZ Steel will reduce NZ’s total annual carbon emissions by approximately 1% - or 800,000 tonnes a year - and meet 5% of the total reductions required between 2026 and 2030 to meet the carbon budget.Underpi...
