Chatham Rock Phosphate Limited has commissioned a study to be carried out by Victoria University of Wellington, led by Professor Jim Johnston, to determine if it is possible to extract rare earth elements from the marine sediments associated with the Chatham Rise phosphate deposit.
The research programme is expected to be completed in calendar 2023 and has the potential to provide New Zealand and strategic international partners with a local source of critical minerals, which are integral to modern technology.
