Meridian Energy has reported an increase in national hydro storage to 101% of the historical average in January 2024.

This marks a rise from 84% at the start of the month.

Storage levels in the South Island reached 95% of the average, while the North Island saw storage increase to 145% of the average.

The company's total inflows for the month were also above average at 118%.

In terms of electricity demand, January 2024 saw a 2.6% increase compared to the same month last year.

Meridian's retail sales volumes in January 2024 were 8.3% higher than January 2023, with segment sales showing growth across residential, small medium business, large business, agriculture, and corporate sectors.

The report noted that January was warm and dry for most of the country, with below normal rainfall except in central and eastern parts of the North Island and the west of the South Island.
