Meridian Energy has reported a significant decrease in national hydro storage levels and low inflows in its monthly operating report for February 2025.
As of March 10, 2025, national hydro storage was at 76% of the historical average, down from 91%.
The South Island storage dropped to 72% of average, while the North Island storage decreased to 103% of average.
Meridian's total inflows for February 2025 were only 42% of the historical average, marking the lowest recorded start to a calendar year since records began.
The Waiau catchment inflows in February were also low, at 31% of the historical average.
In terms of water storage, Meridian's Waitaki catchment was at 81% of the historical average, while the Waiau catchment was only at 35%.
The company attributed the warm and dry weather in February, with above-average temperatures and below-normal rainfall, as the likely cause of these conditions.
National electricity demand in February 2025 was 5.2% lower than the same month last year.
Meridian's retail sales volumes were also 1.9% lower compared to February 2024.
