Meridian's hydro storage levels have significantly decreased, with national storage dropping to 72% of the historical average for May.

In the South Island, storage is now at 73% of average, while the North Island's storage decreased to 64% of average.

The company also experienced lower inflows, as May's total inflows were only 45% of the historical average.

In addition, the Waiau catchment inflows were at 66% of average, and Meridian's Waitaki catchment water storage stood at 77% of average by the end of May.

These developments come amid New Zealand's coldest May in 15 years, which saw below-average rainfall in most of the South Island.

Meridian's retail sales volumes in May 2024 were 2.3% higher than the same month last year, with increased segment sales in residential, small medium business, large business, and agriculture.
