June 2024 Monthly traffic update

Key points:

• In June 2024, there were a total of 745k international passenger movements in the month, a 6% increase compared to the same month in 2023. With international seat capacity in line with last year at 948k for the month, international load factors rose to 79%, an increase of 4.2 percentage points on June 2023;

• New Zealand passport holders accounted for 55% of all international passengers with volumes increasing 5% on June 2023. International travellers with Asian passports increased 10% during June 2024 compared with the prior year with Chinese passport holders increasing 21%;

• Domestic passenger movements declined by 26k or 4% compared to June 2023, with seat capacity also declining by 4%. Load factors were 82% for the month. The decline in passenger movements was a result of the combined effects of;

‒ weakness on the Auckland to Wellington route - passenger volume declined 15k (9%) on the prior year;

‒ fewer peak days (Thu, Fri) and more off-peak days (Sat, Sun) than in June 2023. This factor reduced passenger movements by 8k; and

‒ the remainder of the passenger decline was due to a 7% reduction in airline seat capacity on Fridays, with a corresponding decline in passenger volume.

• Total passenger movements for the month of June 2024 of 1,359k were 89% of the pre-COVID equivalent with domestic passenger movements at 87% and international passenger movements at 90%. For the financial year to 30 June 2024 total passenger movements reached 18.5 million, 88% of the pre-COVID equivalent; and

• Queenstown Airport international passenger numbers in June 2024 increased 11% on the year prior and domestic passengers declined 1% on the same month last year.
