- The Law Commission reviews New Zealand law, then make recommendations to improve it.
- Also advises the responsible minister and government agencies on making the law more accessible and easy to understand.
- Committed to consult the public on areas of law reviewed, and promotes discussion and consultation by publishing issues papers.
- Submissions from the public are called for before recommendations are made to the minister.
- Recommendations are reported to Parliament, and the government then decides whether to, and how it will, amend the law.
