- Pharmac both decides what medicines to fund, and manages a fixed budget for those medicines.
- Also manages the list of vaccines, medicines and devices that are subsidised in the community.
- (Part of the cost is paid by the government, lowering user charges.) Promotes responsible use of medicines, determines which hospital medicines are funded, and manages national contracts for some devices used in public hospitals.
