Economic benefit 'not the issue' on hotel bed tax, council says

The Auckland Council says it will resurrect its bed tax on the city’s hotels next month, despite the economic impact of covid on the sector and legal challenges to the contentious levy.The council’s Accommodation Providers’ Targeted Rate (APTR) was introduced in 2017 by Auckland mayor Phil Goff as a mechanism to fund the city’s tourism and event activity. It was suspended last April by the council on the back of covid's impact. It was then sidelined for an additional month under the city’s emergency budget...
