More than 5,000 people registered for unemployment support in the fortnight to Aug. 28. That brings the total number of people receiving some kind of unemployment benefit to 222,000, compared with 145,000 at the start of the covid-19 pandemic. The 2,717 people who went on to the Covid-19 Income Relief Payment (CIRP) or Job Seeker Support in the week to Aug. 21, is the biggest increase in new jobless since the beginning of July.
