South Port is celebrating news that New Zealand Aluminium Smelters has locked in an electricity supply agreement with three energy companies.In 2020, the majority owner of the smelter, Rio Tinto, announced it intended to wind down the business, which it said wasn’t viable because of high energy costs.After extensive negotiations, NZ Aluminium Smelters (NZAS) said on Friday it had secured 20-year agreements with Meridian, Contact and Mercury to set pricing for an aggregate of 572 megawatts of electricity to the Tiwai smelter, which produce...
