Govt to make bigger contribution to ACC non-earners

The government will pay more into Accident Compensation Corp’s non-earners’ account, which covers injury costs for people who don’t earn or pay levies, such as children, students and retirees. Last month’s budget lifted the government’s contribution by $285 million to $1.76 billion, and Minister Iain Lees-Galloway today said it will rise by a maximum of 7.5 percent per year to improve its solvency. As at March 31, the non-earners’ account was in deficit by $557 million.
