NZ dollar heads for 1.6% weekly gain as strong NZ story contrasts with weaker US data

By Jonathan Underhill Sept. 9 (BusinessDesk) - The New Zealand dollar is heading for a 1.6 percent weekly gain as positive signals for the domestic economy contrast with weaker US data to keep the currency near a 16-month high. The kiwi traded at 73.97 US cents as at 5pm in Wellington, down from 74.57 cents late yesterday but up from 72.99 cents a week ago. The trade-weighted index fell to 78.37 from 78.84 late yesterday, to remain above the average 76 level the Reserve Bank has projected for the third quarter.
