Government moves to give Auckland Council control over transport

The Government is introducing legislation to enable the Auckland Council to take over most transport functions from Auckland Transport.Auckland Mayor Wayne Brown described the introduction of the enabling bill as a major win for Aucklanders.“The bill restores democratic control of transport to elected members and local communities,” he said, noting that Auckland Transport (AT) costs around $1.5 billion per year to run.“But under the existing law, we don’t get to tell AT what to do,” Brown said."The bill finall...
