Tertiary training institutions say they are being inundated with New Zealanders who want to redeploy into alternative careers across construction and other vocational trades. The surge comes as the number of Kiwis on the jobseeker benefit or covid-related support payments jumped by 2,700 during the first week of the higher alert levels in Auckland and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern warning of a “long tail” in the ongoing community cluster, increasing the risk of a further slowdown in hiring.
