The surge comes as the number of Kiwis on the jobseeker benefit or covid-related support payments jumped by 2,700 during the first week of the higher alert levels in Auckland and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern warning of a “long tail” in the ongoing community cluster, increasing the risk of a further slowdown in hiring.
