KiwiRail workers around the country plan to strike in mid-December, stopping work for 24 hours in a move guaranteed to hamstring freight movements.The stoppage will also affect passenger rail networks in Auckland and Wellington and Interislander sailings, severely impacting the transport system a week out from Christmas.The Rail and Maritime Transport Union (RMTU), which has been involved in a protracted pay dispute with the state-owned rail operator, issued strike notices on Tuesday.South Island workers will strike on Dec 16.
