Air New Zealand has announced its first 2030 emissions guidance, aiming to reduce net "well-to-wake" greenhouse gas emissions from jet fuel by 20 to 25 per cent by 2030, compared to a 2019 baseline.
This new approach replaces the airline's 2030 science-based target, which it withdrew from in 2024.
The 2030 emissions guidance will provide a regular and transparent assessment of Air New Zealand's progress towards its 2050 net-zero carbon emissions target and will be updated annually in August as part of its climate statement.
The airline's chief sustainability and corporate affairs officer, Kiri Hannifin, emphasised the importance of having a comprehensive and up-to-date outlook of its emissions trajectory.
Air New Zealand's decarbonisation strategy focuses on the increasing use of sustainable aviation fuel, fleet and network optimisation, operational efficiency improvements, and the use of carbon credits.
