Meridian's conditional 20-year contracts with New Zealand's Aluminium Smelter (NZAS) for the Tiwai Point smelter's future electricity needs has gained Electricity Authority clearance under the materially large contracts regime of the Electricity Industry Participation Code 2010.
Other outstanding conditions still have to be met and the contracts will only take effect if all conditions are satisfied or waived. The contracts will start from either July 1, 2024 or the date of satisfaction/waiver of the conditions.
If the conditions are not met by December 31, 2024, the contracts will not come into effect.
