National hydro storage decreased from 139% to 134% of the historical average in the month to December 10, 2024, according to Meridian's monthly operating report.

The report also revealed a decrease in South Island storage, which was at 137% of the average, while North Island storage increased to 120% of the average.

Meridian's November 2024 monthly total inflows were 119% of the historical average.

Inflows in the Waiau catchment were 89% of the historical average, while the Waitaki catchment had water storage at 151% of the historical average.

Snow storage in the Waitaki catchment was 91% of the average in early December.

Water storage in the Waiau catchment was 88% of the average at the end of November.

The report noted that November 2024 was a dry and warm month for most of the country, with above-average temperatures and below-normal rainfall, except for the South Island's West Coast, which had above-normal rainfall.

National electricity demand in November 2024 was 2.2% lower than the same month last year.

The average load of the New Zealand Aluminium Smelter during November 2024 was 451MW.

Meridian's retail sales volumes in November 2024 were 1.8% higher than in November 2023, with increases in residential, agricultural, and large business segment sales, while small medium business and corporate segment sales decreased.
