South Port New Zealand has announced that New Zealand's Aluminium Smelter (NZAS) has secured 20-year energy supply contracts with Meridian Energy, Contact Energy, and Mercury.

The contracts will be in effect until 2044.

South Port chair, Philip Cory-Wright, described the announcement as great news for NZAS, South Port, and the Southland province, noting that it would provide certainty and confidence for further investment in local businesses and new generation.

The company estimates that the smelter's overall contribution to net profit after tax will be approximately $2 million, excluding the annual licence fee.

NZAS chief executive, Nigel Gear, highlighted the mutually beneficial working relationship between the two businesses and expressed pleasure in seeing the partnership continue for another two decades.
