Napier Port (NZX.NPH) today releases trade volume data for the first quarter ended 31 December 2021. Compared to the same period in the prior year, trade volumes increased 3.4% for bulk cargo led by increased log exports. Containerised cargo volume decreased by 7.7% principally due to less container repositioning activity and continued container shipping schedule disruption.

Container Services

Total container volumes decreased by 7.7% to 53k TEU from 57k TEU in the same period a year ago. Underlying cargo laden, or ‘full’, container volumes (i.e. excluding empties and other container movements) decreased 3.5% whilst total empty and other container movement container volumes decreased 13.4%.

Dry export cargo reduced by 12% to 16k TEU from 18k TEU in the same period a year ago. Wood pulp and timber decreased by 6.9% to 12k TEU. Timber exports were lower due to stronger domestic demand. Wood pulp rose year on year, as the prior year volumes were impacted by exporters’ plant maintenance and shut downs. Both trades continued to be impacted by shipping schedule disruptions and shipping capacity constraints resulting in some modal shift from containerised to bulk cargo.

Reefer export cargo decreased by 5.4% principally due to lower meat export volumes that have been impacted by shipping schedule disruptions and shipping capacity constraints.

An increase in dry general cargo imports mostly offset fewer empty import containers, resulting in a 3.2% decrease of containerised imports.

Other container movements, including DLRs and transhipped containers, decreased by 3k TEU to 2k TEU due to lower container repositioning activity in the quarter.

Container vessel calls were down to 53 ships from 65 ships in the prior year due to continued shipping service schedule disruptions largely caused by continued supply chain congestion regionally and globally.

Bulk Cargo

Total Bulk Cargo volume of 0.98 million tonnes was 3.4% higher than the same period a year ago. Log export volumes increased 5.4%. Other bulk volumes were slightly down on the prior comparative period.

Charter vessel calls increased to 87 from 82 in the same quarter a year ago.

Cruise Services

No cruise calls are expected during the 2021/2022 season.
