Auckland Airport Board appoints new independent director

Auckland Airport is pleased to announce the appointment of a new independent director, Mark Cairns, who will join the Board from 1 June 2022.

Auckland Airport’s Chair Patrick Strange said: “Mark Cairns brings a wealth of experience to Auckland Airport at a time when the organisation is gearing up for the recovery and ramping up its infrastructure building programme.

“We are confident that Mark will make a valuable contribution with his background in logistics, infrastructure, large scale engineering construction projects and capital markets as Auckland Airport sets its sights on the future,” said Mr Strange.

Mr Cairns retired last year as Chief Executive of Port of Tauranga following 16 years in the role. He has a degree in Civil Engineering from University of Auckland, a degree in Business Studies and a Master of Management from Massey University. He is a Fellow of Engineering New Zealand and a Chartered Member of the Institute of Directors. In 2019, Mark received the Caldwell Partners Leadership Award from the Institute of Finance Professionals.

Mr Cairns is Chairman of Freightways, a Director of Sanford and a Director of Meridian Energy, a role from which he will retire next year.

In accordance with Rule 2.6.1 of the NZX Listing Rules, the Board has determined that Mr Cairns is an independent director. His appointment is subject to the Electricity Authority first granting an exemption under section 90 of the Electricity Industry Act 2010.

He will stand for election at the Auckland Airport Annual Shareholders Meeting currently scheduled to be held on 20 October 2022.
