Napier Port (NZX.NPH) today releases trade volume data for the first quarter ended 31 December 2024.

Compared to the first-quarter 2024, trade volumes increased 4.1% for containerised cargo, decreased 9.5% for bulk cargo, and increased 20% for cruise, with 24 vessels calling.

Container Services

Total container volumes increased by 4.1% to 44k TEU from 43k TEU in the same period a year ago. Underlying full, or “cargo laden”, container volumes (i.e. excluding empties and other container movements) increased 10.3% and total empty and other container movement volumes decreased 2.7%.

Dry export cargo increased by 25.6% to 12k TEU from 10k TEU in the same period a year ago. This is mainly due to the reinstatement of Pan Pac’s wood pulp and timber mills, more than offsetting ceased WPI pulp and timber production, and higher canned and other food and beverages.

Reefer export cargo remained at 5k TEU as higher apples and pears were offset by lower frozen meat exports.

Containerised imports decreased by 14.9% to 20k TEU from 24k TEU. The decrease was driven by empty container imports decreasing 22.4% to 13k TEU as a result of later movements of container equipment by shipping lines. Dry imports and reefer imports were flat against the prior comparative period.

Other container movements, including DLRs and transhipped containers, increased to 5k TEU from 1k TEU due to higher container repositioning activity compared to the first quarter of the prior year.

Container vessel calls increased to 61 ships from 58 ships in the prior year.

Bulk Cargo

Total Bulk Cargo volume of 0.91 million tonnes decreased 9.5% compared to the same period a year ago.

Log exports decreased 11% to 0.73 million tonnes, primarily due to the prior year period containing logs sourced from central north island windthrown forests.

Charter vessel calls decreased to 63 from 64 in the same quarter a year ago as lower bulk cargo volume was partially offset by smaller average vessel load sizes.

Cruise Services

Cruise vessel calls during the first quarter were 24, up from 20 in the prior year.

Assuming no further booking cancellations, Napier Port now has actual calls plus remaining bookings totalling 79 cruise vessels for this cruise season.

Further information is included within the attachment.
