A fall in gas supply has decreased greenhouse gas emissions in Taranaki but increased them in Waikato due to more coal being burned.Stats New Zealand’s record of emissions shows they decreased in 13 out of 16 regions in NZ in the year ended December 2024. Taranaki had the largest decrease in total greenhouse gas emissions between 2023 and 2024, down 678 kilotonnes (12%), followed by Canterbury, down 166 kilotonnes (1.3%), and Southland, down 153 kilotonnes (2.4%). “The 12% fall in emissions in the Taranaki region was large...
