New Zealand Aluminium Smelter chief executive Stew Hamilton is fronting up to local business and a “deeply disappointed” Mayor Tim Shadbolt as the community looks for options following this morning’s revelation that Tiwai Point will shut down its smelter furnaces next year and leave Southland.The smelter, the region’s biggest employer, directly employs 992 full time and contracted staff with indirect employment estimated at about 1,600 people.Economic consultancy Infometrics said it accounted for 6.5 percent of...
