Rio Tinto has updated its plans to close the Tiwai Point aluminium smelter at the end of 2024 while reiterating that it wants to keep it running longer.A preliminary study released today outlines what steps would be taken to remediate the smelter site if it closes at the end of 2024.However, the study said: “Rio Tinto sees a positive pathway for New Zealand’s Aluminium Smelter (NZAS) to continue operating and contributing to the local and national economies beyond 2024.
