The New Zealand sharemarket was in a cheerful mood in the run-up to Christmas, with Contact Energy having a strong bounce.The S&P/NZX 50 Index fell at the opening but with the Australian counterpart steaming ahead, the index rose strongly and closed at 12,988.03, up 83.92 points or 0.65%. The index has now had a gain of more than 10% this year with four trading days remaining.Volumes were lighter as investors are thinking more about the summer holidays with 27.68 million shares worth $112.98 million changing hands.
