Open Country Dairy is installing the country’s largest electrode boiler as part of its efforts to improve the sustainability of its operations.The 13-megawatt unit will provide steam for the new dryer the company is installing at its Awarua plant south of Invercargill.Chair Laurie Margrain said the company considered all its fuel options at Awarua – including biomass – and opted for electricity.While the capital cost of the boiler is less than for a coal unit, the operating costs are higher, particularly given recent high wholesale electricity...
