We are exploring our own backyard more than ever this year, with frequent domestic trips in lieu of our usual overseas escapes. Whether it’s taking advantage of our great walks sans the congestion caused by overseas tourists, e-biking around the South Island or simply taking a stroll around the block, you don’t need to look unpolished while “out there doing it”.  This week, I’ve put together a selection of upmarket offerings to update your active wear wardrobe. This list has form and function, but most importantly it has style. See you out on the tracks.

Maggie Marilyn 01 hoodie, $240
Simplistic, elegant and classic, the 01 hoodie is soft and well cut. Perfect for post-Pilates coffee dates, weekend park meanders and more. I’m crossing my fingers this core style is recut in cream someday soon. Shop

Aim’n cobra tights, $110
If you’re in the market for an alternative to the classic black exercise tights but want something dark and subtle, these cobra print tights could be for you. Pair with black, grey marl or white items for a sophisticated ensemble you won’t be afraid to pop to the shop in afterward. Shop

Rodebjer Agita down jacket, $1095 from Muse
A luxe Swedish option made from 100 percent recycled down and polyester. Designed to be worn slightly oversized, it is perfect for those wanting to bring an element of chic to their outdoor pursuits. This is available in black, too, but it’s the crisp white I see creating the most impact. Shop

Lorna Jane Feline open-back active tank, $73.99
Continuing on from the subtle yet standout pieces, this number from Lorna Jane is a way to embrace animal print without feeling like Cheryl West. Also great to see Lorna Jane using a wider variety of body shapes to showcase their activewear. Shop

Nike Joyride Dual Run running shoes, $230 from Stirling Sports
There are a huge number of interesting trainers on the market at the moment and while I generally recommend classic and subdued styles, the interesting colour combination of the Joyride Dual Run caught my eye. Shop

Andi New York multi-function bag, $180, from peoplelikeus.co.nz
We love a multi-use item. This can be worn as a belt bag, cross-body or as a clutch, depending on your mood. It would look amazing teamed with the Maggie Marilyn 01 hoodie and cobra tights featured above for a stylish post-workout look. Shop

Huffer SuperDown jacket, $549
The SuperDown is arguably the most recognisable and coveted item of New Zealand street brand Huffer. For good reason, too. These jackets are 100 percent waterproof, boast a sealed zip and chamber closings, are power filled with 90 percent down, easy to clean and available in myriad colours. I guess that’s what happens when you have 23 years to refine your craft. I wear mine while cheering from the sideline, skiing, after my winter swims and away camping. Shop

Mons Royale Redwood Enduro VT, $130
Stand out in the forest while you blaze the mountain bike trails in one of Mons Royale’s signature merino bike tops. Even in the warmest conditions these lightweight pieces are lovely to wear, and they age well. I’m loving the tones in this sunny colour combination. Shop

Mons Royale Momentum bike shorts 2.0, $230
We are in the midst of a biking boom, with some regions experiencing a 40 percent increase in bike sales year on year. E-bikes have allowed those who hung up their cleats years ago to get back in the saddle and ride many of this country’s incredible trails. Mons Royale, based in Wanaka, produces merino tech clothing built for riding in all conditions, with a soft breathable merino inner for sweat wicking and comfort. Shop

Edmund Hillary Yeti jacket, $495
Perfect to take you through the seasons, and easy to pack, this silk and lambswool insulated jacket works well on its own or as a base layer in colder conditions. Wear it while horse-riding, hiking or playing golf, then straight to the restaurant afterwards. A portion of the revenue from each sale goes towards causes that were close to Sir Ed’s heart. Shop

Nike men’s woven trousers, $180
When you feel the urge to reach for those terrible trousers that have a zip at the knee to allow shorts to become pants – please don’t. Try these Nike lightweight hiking cargos for size. Ready for all-weather hiking situations, while being stylish and considered. Shop

North Face men’s tramping boots, $330
With international travel off the table for most, this is the ideal time to knock a few of this country’s great walks off the bucket list. These hiking boots have technology in the sole that claims to maximise energy return as you step, allowing you to cover more distance faster. Shop
