Rio Tinto counts Tiwai smelter clean-up costs

The Tiwai Point aluminium smelter’s operator has released detailed reports showing the extent of the 50 year-old site's contamination, but is optimistic it can still be cleaned up within the current budget of about $350 million.The smelter’s majority owner, Rio Tinto, released studies showing widespread contamination in line with what would be expected from half a century of heavy industrial use.This includes soil contamination beyond many health limits.
