KiwiRail rejected a cleaner fuel option for its new ferries due to concerns over engine availability, despite a Swedish ferry using the fuel since 2015.The state-owned enterprise (SOE) signed a $551 million contract with Korean shipyard Hyundai Mipo Dockyard in June to build two new Interislander ferries, expected to be delivered in 2025 and 2026, to replace its current ageing fleet.With a 30-year lifespan, the procurement project has been described as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reduce carbon emissions.
