Auckland Airport is set to begin its biggest redevelopment since the airport opened in 1966, with a multi-billion-dollar investment in a brand-new domestic terminal to be integrated into the international terminal.

The combined terminal, due to open between 2028 and 2029, will bring domestic and international travel together under the same roof for the first time since 1977.

The terminal integration programme, which is a key component of the airport’s wider 10-year capital programme, is set to create 2,000 jobs at the height of construction and is estimated to cost circa $3.9b.

It will include 12 new domestic aircraft gates, state-of-the-art check-in facilities and a smart baggage system, as well as faster links to public transport.

The project is part of a global rebuild of airports estimated to cost $US2.4 trillion over the next two decades.
