- Maritime NZ develops and monitors maritime safety and marine protection rules.

- Conducts safety inspections of all ships calling at NZ ports, investigates and analyses maritime accidents, and promotes safe recreational boating.
- Educates the maritime community on safety and environmental standards.
- Provides and operates lighthouses and other navigation aids, and a coastal maritime safety and distress radio service.
- Manages the national search and rescue response service and responds to distress calls and beacon activations.
- Provides a service to minimise effects of pollution from ships and offshore oil and gas platforms, and administers the NZ Oil Pollution Fund.
