Chief of Army

  • Appointed on 10 September 2018.
  • Regimental, staff and training appointments include chief instructor of Combat School, director Army training, and military assistant at the NZ Commission in London.
  • Appointments have included head of strategy management (Army), acting deputy chief of Army, and chief staff officer joint plans at headquarters Joint Forces NZ.
  • Has served as assistant chief strategic commitments and engagements and in the Army as the land component commander.
  • Has deployed on operations with the United Nations in Angola, East Timor and the Middle East.
  • Served as infantry officer with the 1st Battalion, Royal NZ Infantry Regiment in Singapore and NZ, and completed two postings to the 2nd/1st Infantry Battalion, including as commanding officer.
  • Deployed to Afghanistan in April 2010 as senior national officer and commanding officer of the NZ Provincial Reconstruction Team.
  • Awarded the Distinguished Service Decoration for service in Afghanistan.
  • A graduate of the Australian Command and Staff College and the National Defence College of India. Is a Master of defence studies (University of Canberra), a Master of philosophy (defence and strategic studies, University of Madras), and earned a Master of management, a Bachelor of arts (history) and a post-graduate diploma in business administration from Massey University.
