Contact Energy is claiming a leading role in decarbonising New Zealand’s economy as it presses ahead with a $580 million geothermal project and signals another $800 million of potential work in the pipeline.The electricity generator and retailer today confirmed plans to go ahead with the 152.5 megawatt geothermal plant at Tauhara near Taupō, which it estimates will reduce emissions by 450,000 tonnes of carbon per year – the equivalent of removing 200,000 petrol cars from the roads.Work will begin on the project soon and is expected...
