New Zealand Aluminium Smelters has signed 20-year electricity arrangements that secure the future of the Tiwai Point operation in Southland, owner Rio Tinto says.NZAS has signed contracts with electricity generators Meridian, Contact and Mercury to set pricing for an aggregate of 572 megawatts (MW) of electricity to Tiwai smelter, which produces high-purity aluminium for global export and domestic supply.It marks the end of complex negotiations spanning more than 18 months.
