KiwiRail signs $550m ferry deal with HMD

KiwiRail and Korean shipyard Hyundai Mipo Dockyard have signed off on the delivery of two new Cook Strait ferries, at a price tag of US$369 million. The ferries will now arrive in 2025 and 2026, a year later than originally mooted.They are part of a $1.45 billion ferry upgrade programme which includes the terminal infrastructure at Kaiwharawhara in Wellington and Waitohi Picton being reconfigured to cater for the new rail ferries.KiwiRail chief executive Greg Miller said the state-owned enterprise had been working on the upgrade project fo...
