Foodstuffs to appeal supermarket merger ban

The two Foodstuffs co-operatives have confirmed they will appeal the Commerce Commission blocking the merger of the supermarket chains. Foodstuffs North Island (FSNI) and Foodstuffs South Island (FSSI) insist that merging into a single national co-operative will lower checkout prices due to efficiency gains.They have filed a notice of appeal in the High Court stating that ComCom made the wrong decision because the merger would not substantially decrease competition in any market. The regulator said the merger would reduce the number o...
