New foldable "mobile office that thinks alongside you".
In the ever-evolving landscape of business technology, Samsung say foldable phones are emerging as must-have tool for savvy professionals.
Samsung’s head of B2B mobile, Prentice Robb, says Samsung's next generation Galaxy Z Fold6 delivers powerhouse performance for business users – it is a kind of mobile office that thinks alongside you, with artificial intelligence woven into its very core.
“When you consider that you could replace a laptop or a desktop with the Fold6 specifically, it makes commercial sense,” he says. “Even beyond the efficiency gains for everyday business use, it becomes a strong proposition.”
For forward-thinking professionals wanting to stay ahead of the curve, Robb says the Galaxy Z Fold6 offers a compelling blend of innovation and practicality – and is making a significant business-focused technology leap.
Foldable smartphones are a fast-growing technology in Samsung’s portfolio, attracting customers from other form factors and brands. It’s experienced 20 per cent year-on-year growth in New Zealand with the market projected to be worth $200 million by 2025. Research by TrendForce predicts that the popularity of foldable phones will more than triple by 2028, and Kantar Worldpanel ComTech found their popularity had grown by 60 per cent in the past year.
Globally, Samsung accounts for over two-thirds of total foldable shipments. By the end of this year, it’s expected to ship 18m foldable phones and up to 70m by 2027.
The tech giant aims to attract traditional phone users with the carrot of artificial intelligence. Galaxy AI should be integrated into 200m devices by year-end, highlighting Samsung’s commitment to a tech-driven future and a significant shift in its business strategy.
This achievement is notable, especially as Apple has yet to incorporate its latest AI features into its phones: “We’re obviously built on Android, which presents a wide pool of business-centric applications and partnerships” says Robb.
Samsung's 2024 foldable devices come loaded with even more Galaxy AI features, making the most of their unique design. These enhancements (see in full at the bottom of story) build on the features introduced in the previous generation's OneUI 6.1 update.
Like the Interpreter function: This feature, upgraded to support the unique form factor of foldable devices, includes conversation mode and listen mode. In conversation mode, you can talk to the phone, which translates it in real-time and displays the translation on the cover display for the other person to read. Listening mode is designed for one-way translation, useful during lectures or presentations.
"We're now at 16 languages in the pack that you can download onto your device. You can speak or text in real-time and it will translate... It's amazing for doing business globally,” says Robb. The opportunity there is exciting, it really connects the world.”
Along with that, Note Assist – the native Samsung app for note-taking – has been upgraded with a new transcript feature, enabling transcription, translation, and summarising of voice recordings within the app. These are in addition to the existing Galaxy AI features, which offer translation, summaries, and auto formatting.
Security and performance
Security is a top priority for businesses and the Galaxy Z Fold6 Enterprise Edition addresses this with Samsung's Knox, offering what Prentice describes as ‘government-grade’ protection: “The level of security that we have on our all of our devices from the chip up is best in class. Samsung Knox is a primary reason that Blue Chip Corporations and Governments globally choose Samsung devices.”
The device also features improved durability, with a new dual rail hinge that is stronger and thinner. It has achieved an IP48 rating for water resistance, addressing concerns about the device's resilience in various work environments.
Performance-wise, the device is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy, delivering the necessary top-tier performance for demanding business applications, along with improved power efficiency.
Enterprise Edition
Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold6, is also available in Enterprise Edition, which has several financial benefits for businesses out of the box. The bundle includes a Knox Suite licence free for one year, then a 50 per c ent discount for the next two years, a two-year market availability ensured from global launch, and three years of extended warranty. Additionally, it is offering up to seven years of security and maintenance releases, addressing long-term concerns about device longevity and support.
Other features of the Galaxy Z Fold6 Enterprise Edition:
- Galaxy AI in PDFs: Samsung has integrated Galaxy AI in PDF files within the Notes app. With Galaxy AI, text in PDFs can be translated and overlaid through PDF overlay, supporting text in images and graphs.
- Composer: Another Notes app feature, Composer generates text based on keywords, supporting both long-form text generation, such as emails, and short-form, like taglines for social media posts. Composer also has a built-in option to set the tone for the text.
- Sketch to Image: Galaxy AI can now generate images based on rough sketches. On the Fold6, which supports the S Pen, Sketch to Image allows you to create graphics using sketches or drawings saved in the Notes screen. On the Flip, you can draw on existing images and generate new ones.
- Gemini app: Google Gemini is now offered as the default assistant on both foldable models.
- Circle to Search: Google’s Circle to Search has been enhanced with live translate and homework features.
- Live Translate: Live translate enables users to translate text on screen, even if the text is in more than one language. Homework helps in solving math problems. Samsung is expanding this feature beyond its native calling app to a selection of popular third-party apps.
- Portrait Studio: Samsung now offers different styles like 3D cartoon and watercolour to add flair to your portrait images.
