The Wellington district court has fined Waste Management $450,000 for the chemical poisoning of employee James Gideon in August 2017.Gideon was overcome by hydrogen sulphide gas emitted at a treatment pit while he was working at the company's hazardous waste facility in Seaview, Lower Hutt.In sentencing on Tuesday, Judge Bruce Davidson said a “wholesale systemic failure” had led to the creation of a fatal gas chamber at the facility. He imposed a fine under sections 36 and 48 of the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 of $45...
