A new draft code of welfare for pigs could lead to the death of 60,000 additional piglets a year and effectively wipe out New Zealand’s pig industry, says lobby group NZPork.The draft code – which is open for public consultation – goes well beyond the welfare requirements in other countries and imposes “unachievable minimum standards” on farmers, said Brent Kleiss, chief executive of NZPork.At the heart of the matter are farrowing crates and mating systems for pigs. Both have come under scrutiny after the high...
