Alliance Group has confirmed it will shut its Smithfield plant in South Canterbury.The country’s only fully farmer-owned meat co-operative announced last month its proposal to close the plant, blaming declining sheep numbers.That had led to an oversupply in its network.Consultation with staff closed on Oct 11.
