The site of Alliance Group’s now-closed Smithfield freezing works has hit the market.The embattled red meat co-operative announced the plan to close the 140-year-old Timaru meat processing plant in September last year.It blamed declining sheep numbers because of land-use change, which had led to an oversupply in its network.Given the time of season, sheep, calves and night-shift venison stopped immediately and venison day-shift processing continued until the end of last year.Alliance operates another plant, an hour away just north of Oama...
