The Commerce Commission has declined the merger proposal of Foodstuffs North Island and Foodstuffs South Island.ComCom chair John Small said the proposed merger would have resulted in a permanent structural change to the grocery industry and was not satisfied it would not substantially lower competition. “We are concerned about the impact this could have on competition and New Zealand consumers,” he said on Tuesday.The separate co-operatives sought clearance to merge into a single national grocery entity in late 2023.
